Learning to speak another language can be a challenge, but it can be fun, too! Share these activities with your young Spanish speaker to bring the learning home.
Buy music in Spanish – memorized words of songs can come to the rescue when we need them most. Natalia Lafourcade, Mana, Luis Miguel, and Ricardo Arjona are good picks.
Watch DVDs in Spanish – don’t just select the Spanish subtitles; instead choose the Spanish subtitles with the Spanish dubbing. This gives the language learner the visual/auditory double whammy!
Have Spanish-Only Spots – make it your car, the laundry room, the kitchen, wherever, but have a special spot in your house where Spanish is the only language spoken.
Pick Up Free Resources Around Town – The Hispanic Yellow Pages are free at many Latino grocery stores and restaurants, free Spanish newspapers are available on most major corners of the city, and the Multnomah County Library has great bi-lingual programs for kids.
Read Spanish Bedtime Stories – ‘nough said.
Watch the News in Spanish – Keep a close eye as Univision and Telemundo morning shows can be racy, but you can get the gist of most stories even if you don’t speak Spanish.
Visit the Hispanic Neighborhoods and Businesses of Portland – North Portland especially has blocks of Latino-owned businesses. Give your child five dollars worth of “fun money” to spend on things they’ve never seen before. Take ‘em home and try ‘em.
Engage in “Reciprocal Teaching” – Give your child an opportunity to teach you new words in Spanish.
Listen to KBOO.
Do Funky Workout Videos in Spanish – These are available through Multnomah County Library and they’re fun!
Adults Only! PSU Immersion Weekends – PSU offers immersion weekends for adults. Most begin on Friday night and continue throughout the weekend with movies, cooking lessons, etc.
Plan a Trip to a Language School – This is where it really happens!
